Writing is a solitary existence. Making a movie is controlled chaos – thousands of moving parts and people. Every decision is a compromise. If you‘re writing and you don’t like how your character looks or talks, you just fix it. But in a movie, if there’s something you don’t like, that’s tough.

I run about four days per week and do some sort of hike or yoga/stretching on the other three. Kind of self-propelling my body and muscles forward in my own controlled chaos helps me find the ground a little bit easier on the daily.

The controlled chaos is one way to get creativity. The intensity of it, the physical rush, the intimacy created the kind of dialogue that leads to synergy…

I’m 100% better with a little bit of controlled chaos. I just know if I have three things to do, or nine things to do, I’m just better at them if I have nine.
