Then it evolved into more of a ballad style singer/songwriter thing. And there was a conflict in trying to merge the two styles with the same band behind me. ‘Cause the musicians that I would need to do ballad-oriented tunes would require musicians who were more into jazz.
Anything too far out of tune with our attitude is lost, either in the ears themselves or somewhere beyond, but it is lost.
A friend and I flew south with our children. During the week we spent together I took off my shoes, let down my hair, took apart my psyche, cleaned the pieces, and put them together again in much improved condition. I feel like a car that’s just had a tune-up. Only another woman could have acted as the mechanic.

Sometimes I’ll have sections that I’m not quite sure how they fit in the puzzle of a tune, they’ll get moved around; what I think was originally a verse ends up becoming the chorus, or what’s an intro gets dropped as a hook, things get shifted around a lot.
If we had about 100 years, that sort of slow cultural conversion would be exactly the thing to do. But physics is calling the tune here. We’ve got to respond to a timetable that physics has set for us.
I hate how all the hip hop bands of today will put crazy sound effects into their songs. You know what I mean, like a police or ambulance siren in a tune? Because I could own the CD, I could listen to it 50 gamillion times in my car – I still fall for it every time.

I play a little guitar, write a few tunes, make a few movies, but none of that’s really me. The real me is something else.

I dont really watch a lot of TV, but I do watch Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Looney Tunes and old classic cartoons.
What matters in modern music is not the part you can write down, the words and the tune, but the rest – the texture, the atmosphere, the references and associations.
I don’t look at people’s expressions, because I still get nervous when I play, especially when I first put the harp up there. I just try to tune – it takes me a half-hour to tune, and I get nervous if I look at anybody when I do it.
Part of that, I think, is being able to tune out folly, as distinguished from recognizing wisdom. You’ve got whole categories of things you just bat away so your brain isn’t cluttered with them. That way, you’re better able to pick up a few sensible things to do.
People don’t tune in to watch network executives‘ decisions. They don’t tune in to watch writers‘ decisions. They tune in to watch people that they like.
